This pension present value calculator turns a stream of checks into one number: what the benefit is worth in today’s dollars. Enter the amount per check, your age, the age payments begin, a discount rate or the IRS segment rates, and an optional COLA. It will calculate what every check is worth today and can weight each one by the odds, from the Social Security Administration’s life table, that you’re alive to cash it.

The defaults describe a 55-year-old man with a deferred monthly pension benefit of $2,000 starting at 65. At 5%, paid on the first of each month until the SSA average age (80 years, 9 months), the 189 checks add up to $378,000 and have a present value of $162,274, about 6.8 years of payments. Weight each check by survival odds and it falls to $148,336.
Pension Present Value Calculator
Turn a monthly pension into one number in today's dollars: discount every check at your rate or the IRS 417(e) segment rates, with an optional COLA, a deferred start, and SSA life-table odds.
Discounts each monthly check at one rate or at the IRS 417(e) segment rates (July 2026 defaults, Notice 2026-51), with an optional yearly COLA, and counts checks to the SSA average age, to an age you pick, or weighted by the SSA Period Life Table 2023. It ignores survivor benefits, taxes, plan early-retirement factors, the IRS unisex mortality table, and PBGC limits, so a plan's own figure will differ. How to Calculate the Present Value of a Monthly Pension
The present value of a pension is the one-time deposit that, invested today at compound interest, would fund every check exactly. Each future amount is divided by (1 + r) raised to the years until it arrives; the sum is the current value of the income stream. NPV, net present value, does the same math and then subtracts a price.
- Amount. The single-life figure from your plan statement.
- Start. Ten years of waiting at 5% cuts the value by 39%, because $1 paid a decade out is worth $0.61 today.
- Length. To an age you name, to the average age in a life table, or weighted by the chance of being alive.
- Rate. The interest rate or rate of return you could earn elsewhere at similar risk.
Timing within the month barely matters. We assume checks arrive on the first, an annuity due; at month end the default slips $658, to $161,616. The number of years and the rate matter far more. In a spreadsheet, =PV(1.05^(1/12)-1, 189, -2000, 0, 1)/1.05^10 returns the same $162,274.08, so you can check our calculation.
Picking the Discount Rate
No rate is correct for everyone. Match it to what the money could earn with similar safety. A benefit from a well-funded DB plan (defined benefit) insured by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation behaves more like a high-grade corporate bond than a stock fund, so bond yields are the usual anchor. An expected stock return of 7% treats guaranteed income as if it carried market risk.
| Rate | To the SSA average age | Survival-weighted |
|---|---|---|
| 3% | $225,152 | $213,874 |
| 4% | $190,815 | $177,561 |
| 5% | $162,274 | $148,336 |
| 6% | $138,465 | $124,645 |
| 7% | $118,533 | $105,310 |
One point of rate moves the result by about a sixth. Drop from 5% to 4% and the present value of the pension would rise $28,541, which is why two appraisers can read one statement and disagree by five figures.
IRS 417(e) Segment Rates: The Official Yardstick
A pension plan can’t pay a lump-sum amount below the value set by the IRS minimum present value segment rates and the IRS mortality table, a floor in Internal Revenue Code section 417(e)(3). The rates come from one month of the corporate bond yield curve, with no 24-month average. Checks due within 5 years use the first segment, the next 15 years the second, and anything later the third.
| Month | First | Second | Third |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | 4.62% | 5.62% | 6.51% |
| June 2026 | 4.49% | 5.43% | 6.18% |
| May 2026 | 4.42% | 5.47% | 6.31% |
| January 2026 | 4.03% | 5.20% | 6.12% |
Our defaults use July 2026 (IRS Notice 2026-51, September 14, 2026); the irs.gov table still stopped at May, so check the notices first. On the default benefit, July rates give $140,125 to the average age and $124,222 survival-weighted. Every check lands in the second or third segment, since the first is 10 years out.
Plans use a lookback month their document names. The 2026 IRS table (Notice 2025-40) blends male and female rates; we use the SSA’s sex-specific table, so expect a figure close to, not equal to, the plan’s actuarial one.
Life Expectancy Horizon or Survival Odds?
The simple approach stops checks at the average age. For a man of 55, the SSA Period Life Table 2023 (behind the 2026 Trustees Report) shows 25.73 more years. Our life expectancy calculator uses the same table.
The survival-weighted method multiplies each check by the chance you’re alive to receive it. Two effects pull the answer down:
- There’s a 10.6% chance of dying before 65.
- Checks gained by living to 95 are far off and heavily discounted, while checks lost by dying at 70 are near and weigh more.
So the weighted $148,336 sits $13,938 below the average-age figure, although expected payments are higher ($389,708 against $378,000). That’s how actuaries price a lifetime benefit, and the true value to evaluate.
COLA and Inflation: What a Yearly Raise Is Worth
A cost-of-living adjustment is a raise written into the benefit. Public plans, including a typical teaching pension, often have one; few private sector plans do, paying a fixed amount each year while inflation erodes its purchasing power.
With a 2% COLA every 12 checks, the default climbs from $162,274 to $184,874, and the last check reaches $2,691.74. A benefit that can’t keep up with inflation loses a third of its real value over 20 years at 2% price growth.
Don’t pair a real, after-price-growth rate with a COLA; that counts rising prices twice.
Valuing a Pension for Divorce, Net Worth, and Planning
- Divorce. A qualified domestic relations order (QDRO) is a state court order, approved by the plan administrator, that pays part of a benefit to an alternate payee such as a former spouse. Some orders split each check; others trade the pension’s present value against an IRA or the house. The date, the rate, and whether survivor benefits count are negotiable.
- Net worth. A value on the balance sheet is the cleanest way to compare a benefit with a 401(k) or investment account while you’re saving for retirement.
- Planning. Pension income that covers most monthly expenses changes how much savings you need.
For a man already 65, the same $2,000 is worth $288,923 at 5% to his average age, or $270,197 survival-weighted. Federal workers can take the annuity from our FERS retirement calculator and enter it here.
Lump Sum or Monthly: Where Valuing Stops
A present value says what checks are worth, not whether to accept a lump sum payout. That choice adds the plan’s offer, taxes, health, other income in retirement, and the peace of mind of guaranteed checks. If you can choose to take cash, compare the offer with the survival-weighted value using current IRS segment rates, then run it through our offer comparison tool.
What This Pension Present Value Calculator Leaves Out
- Joint forms. We value the single-life payment option; a joint and survivor form pays less per check.
- Taxes. Pension payments are generally taxed as ordinary income (IRS Publication 575), unlike qualified Roth withdrawals.
- PBGC limits. For single-employer plans ending in 2026, the insured maximum at 65 is $7,789.77 a month, straight life.
- Future accruals. Added years of service and raises aren’t included; we don’t project growth.
Start with your current pension statement: enter the amount payable upon retirement into the pension present value calculator above. Run 4%, 5%, and 6%, try the survival-weighted option, then the July 2026 segment rates. For a divorce, ask the plan or a financial advisor which rate month and mortality table they’ll use.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a $3,000 a month pension worth?
For a man retiring at 65 now, at 5%: about $433,384 to his SSA average age, or $405,295 survival-weighted.
Is this a pension calculator like my employer’s?
No. A pension calculator on a retirement plan site projects the monthly benefit from salary and service, and a payout calculator shows the check. This free calculator takes that monthly payment and returns the present value of future checks.
What discount rate should I use?
Start near corporate bond yields; the July 2026 IRS segment rates ran 4.62% to 6.51%. A free present value calculator for bonds can price one check, but not a lifetime of them. Calculating present value for a whole benefit also needs the start age and a life table; that’s how the tool above finds the present value of your pension, turning retirement income into one balance-sheet figure.
